How Does Stephen Curry's New Role As Assistant General Manager Affect His Basketball Career?

Stephen Curry just accepted the role of assistant general manager of Davidson College basketball, his alma mater. Speculations are rising like flames– what effect does this have on his basketball career?

When the news broke of Curry’s new role, fans drove straight to social media to speculate what we are all theorizing: is Curry’s retirement closer than we think?

While Curry’s contract with the Golden State Warriors is coming to an end at the conclusion of the 2026-2027 season, it would be wise to assume that he would want to continue to play for the next few years. His last championship with the team was in 2022, the same year he signed his 4 year contract. The 2024-2025 Warriors season is no match for their 2022 record. The team currently sits 6th in the western conference, with a 36-28 record so far. In 2022, the team sat 3rd in the western conference with a 53-29 record.

With Curry’s 4 year contract coming to an end and a drive to knock out the remaining 5 teams in the western conference, do the Warriors have another championship on the way? If they find themselves becoming NBA champions again, will Curry be gone by the next season? Or is this new role as general assistant manager not as frightening as we may think?

Curry spent most of his college career playing basketball for Davidson and ultimately led them to a high ranking success. In his sophomore season of 2007-2008, Curry drove the Wildcats to a 26-6 regular season record, a 20-0 conference record, and a trip to the 2008 NCAA tournament. He broke official records, as well as those of his own, and became one of the best NCAA basketball players during his time at Davidson. Since his attendance, Curry has remained a lifetime supporter of Davidson men’s and women’s basketball. His legacy and constant support for Davidson gives much reason to his new role as assistant general manager of men’s and women’s basketball.

While the news of Curry’s new role may have shocked and frightened fans, this shift may not be as detrimental to his own basketball career as we may think. However, with his 4 year contract coming to an end with the Warriors, it would be wise to keep retirement in the pit of theories.
