2025 has been a successful year for women’s sports in America. The WNBA’s viewership is higher than ever, more and more WNBA teams are popping up across the country, and semi-professional leagues are finally getting the recognition they deserve. The Portland Thorns FC, Portland Fire, and Portland Cherry Bombs FC are three of some of the greatest upcoming sports teams in the Pacific Northwest.

The Portland Thorns FC—a NWSL team—was established in 2012 and has since won three championships in 2013, 2017, and 2022. As for the current 2025 season, the Thorns pursued another championship but unfortunately fell short against the Washington Spirit. In spite of this, the Thorns’ own captain and midfielder Sam Coffey has been nominated for the 2025 U.S. Soccer Female Of The Year Award. This team’s liveliness has captured a variety of attention from soccer fans across the country—making them one of the best sports leagues in Portland Oregon.

The WNBA’s Portland Fire are officially being reestablished in Portland Oregon for the upcoming 2026 season. Though the original team only played for two years between 2000 and 2002, the revamping of the team and its legacy has gotten Portland excited for their very own WNBA team once again. The organization has recruited some all-star staff members such as head coach Alex Samara—a former assistant coach to the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers. Vanya Cernivec has been hired as the team’s general manager—a former vice president of the WNBA’s Golden State Valkyries and international recruitment agent for the NBA. The future of Portland is fiery and honorable.

The Portland Pickles and Portland Bangers FC have established yet another rockstar semi-professional sports team—the Portland Cherry Bombs FC. With a culture rooted in Rose City and empowering rock n roll music, the Portland Cherry Bombs FC have done an impeccable job at marketing themselves before their very first season. The Cherry Bombs FC have certainly added an exciting touch to women’s sports and the funky culture of Portland Oregon.
